New York, July 9, 2025 — Tensions have flared in American political circles after President Donald Trump strongly criticized New York Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani for his recent comments targeting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The Indian-origin politician had stated that if Netanyahu visits New York, he should be detained under an ICC arrest warrant related to alleged war crimes in Gaza — a statement that has drawn sharp backlash from Trump.

During a media interaction ahead of a private dinner with Netanyahu, Trump didn’t hold back. Without naming Mamdani initially, he labeled the politician a “communist” and accused him of harboring anti-Jewish sentiments.
“He’s not just a socialist—he’s a communist. And he’s said terrible things about the Jewish community,” Trump said.
The comments were directed at Mamdani, a progressive Democrat from Queens and a vocal critic of Israeli military action in Gaza. Mamdani recently pledged that, if elected as Mayor of New York City, he would enforce the International Criminal Court’s warrant against Netanyahu if the Israeli leader enters the city.
🔴 “He Needs the White House”
Trump, while discussing potential funding for New York City, made it clear that any future mayor would need cooperation from the federal government. He warned that without aligning with federal policies, city leadership may face challenges in securing White House support.
“If he wins—maybe he will—he’ll have to cooperate. It all goes through the White House. He better behave, or it won’t end well for him,” Trump added, alluding to future federal aid.
🗣️ Netanyahu Responds
Speaking alongside Trump, Israeli PM Netanyahu appeared unshaken by the arrest talk. When asked if he was worried about Mamdani’s remarks, Netanyahu calmly replied:
The political clash comes as Mamdani continues to gain popularity among progressive voters, especially after positioning himself as a potential mayoral contender for the upcoming elections.
“I’m not concerned about that,” to which Trump immediately interjected, “I’ll get him out.”
Netanyahu is expected to visit the U.S. again soon, possibly for the upcoming UN General Assembly in September, although a joint appearance with Trump in New York may happen earlier.
