Bayern Munich’s rising star Jamal Musiala suffered a devastating injury during the Club World Cup quarterfinal against Paris Saint-Germain on Saturday, casting a shadow over an intense European showdown at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
The 22-year-old midfielder went down late in the first half following a 50-50 challenge with PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. The incident occurred as both players raced to a loose ball inside the box. Musiala’s left leg got caught awkwardly under Donnarumma’s body, with replays suggesting a significant ankle twist — raising fears of a possible fracture or ligament damage.
Musiala remained on the pitch in visible agony, screaming in pain and unable to put weight on his leg. The severity of the injury led stadium officials to avoid showing the replay on the big screen, while Bayern’s medical staff rushed to provide immediate care.
A visibly shaken Donnarumma dropped to the turf, holding his head, clearly distressed by the accidental collision. Players from both sides gathered around the young German, forming a protective circle while he was carefully placed on a stretcher and taken off the field.
In a touching moment of sportsmanship, both Bayern and PSG players consoled Donnarumma, reassuring him that the unfortunate incident wasn’t his fault.
Referee Anthony Taylor blew the whistle for halftime shortly after the incident, with the match still goalless at 0-0.
Musiala’s Tournament Form
Coming into the match, Jamal Musiala had been one of Bayern’s standout performers in the tournament. He had scored three goals in previous Club World Cup fixtures — just one shy of top scorers Ángel Di María and Marcos Leonardo. This season alone, Musiala has netted 20 goals across all competitions, including 12 in the Bundesliga and three in the UEFA Champions League.
As Bayern awaits updates on the full extent of the injury, concern now turns to Musiala’s recovery and how long the talented midfielder might be sidelined.
