Minneapolis/South Dakota, June 30 — A series of powerful tornadoes tore through parts of South Dakota and Minnesota over the weekend, causing widespread damage, toppling trees, and leaving tens of thousands without electricity.
In Minnesota, the National Weather Service reported that the tornadoes began touching down shortly after midnight on Sunday, June 29, with central and southern regions hit the hardest. At least four tornadoes were confirmed near the Minneapolis area, said Mike Griesinger, lead forecaster with the NWS Twin Cities office.
While no major injuries have been reported, the storms caused significant property damage. One resident, Kyle Brindlinger, described the destruction to MPR News: “We lost around 15 large pine trees. One crushed my truck, and another collapsed part of our garage. Our home will never look the same.
Over 50,000 homes and businesses experienced power outages across the affected areas, with utility crews working around the clock to restore services.
In neighboring South Dakota, tornado sirens blared from Saturday afternoon into early Sunday, triggering evacuations and emergency sheltering. At the Buffalo Ridge Resort and Spa, guests were rushed into underground tunnels and restaurant shelters as the storm approached.
There was a lot of fear among the kids and the elderly,” said Sara Guest, a staff member at the resort. “We tried to keep everyone calm and as comfortable as possible while waiting out the storm underground.
Authorities are assessing the full extent of the damage, and cleanup efforts are now underway across both states.
