In one of the most intense assaults in recent weeks, Russian forces launched a massive drone and missile attack on Kyiv early Friday morning, severely damaging residential areas and igniting fires across Ukraine’s capital, officials confirmed. The barrage lasted over six hours and struck at least 13 locations across five city districts, according to Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv’s military administration.
“Many of the targets were civilian homes,” Tkachenko told Reuters. Fires broke out in multiple neighborhoods, including Svyatoshynskyi and Solomianskyi districts, with injuries likely in the western part of the city. A fire also engulfed the roof of a 16-story apartment building in a northern suburb, as confirmed by Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko.
One unverified video circulating online claimed to show Kyiv International Airport in Zhuliany ablaze, although independent verification is still pending.
The aerial assault came just hours after U.S. President Donald Trump held a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin—marking their sixth call since Trump’s return to office. Speaking to reporters, Trump admitted, “We talked about Ukraine. I’m not happy about that. No, I didn’t make any progress.”
Kremlin advisor Yuri Ushakov described the call as “frank and businesslike,” stating Putin reiterated that Russia will not abandon its war goals. Trump is expected to speak with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky later today, amid ongoing U.S. debates about aid to Ukraine.
As Ukraine reels from the fresh wave of destruction, global eyes are once again on Washington. While Trump has promised to end the war swiftly using diplomacy, critics note the lack of new sanctions on Russia and paused weapons support.
With civilian areas increasingly targeted, Ukraine’s call for stronger global action grows more urgent.
