In a startling case from Mauritius, a young British child became inadvertently involved in a major international drug trafficking operation. Authorities at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport discovered a large quantity of cannabis — estimated to be worth around £1.6 million — inside the luggage of a group arriving from the UK. Among those detained was a six-year-old boy, whose bag reportedly contained multiple drug packages.

The group had arrived on British Airways flight BA 2065 from London Gatwick. Following a joint operation by Mauritian customs and police, supported by sniffer dogs, officers uncovered approximately 161kg of cannabis hidden in various suitcases. Shockingly, around 14kg was found in the child’s luggage. His 35-year-old mother was allegedly carrying 29 packages, while her Romanian partner held 32. Four other British nationals, all women, were also detained.
Authorities acted swiftly, arresting all six adults, who were later presented in a magistrate’s court in Mahebourg. They now face provisional charges related to drug trafficking. The court denied bail, and all suspects remain in custody as investigations continue.
Concerns about the child’s welfare were immediately raised. The British High Commission and Foreign Office were notified, and coordinated efforts ensured the boy’s safe return to the UK. He was flown back on Wednesday and reunited with his father upon arrival. Some reports have noted conflicting information regarding the child’s exact age, stating he may be either six or seven.
Officials in Mauritius have strongly condemned the use of a minor in such an operation, calling it “inhumane and deeply troubling.” The investigation remains ongoing.
