Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, for the 2025 BRICS Summit, marking the fourth leg of his five-nation diplomatic tour that began on July 2. His visit to Brazil comes after engagements in Ghana, Trinidad & Tobago, and Argentina — where he became the first Indian PM to visit in over five decades. The final stop of the tour will be Namibia.

This year’s BRICS Summit, though missing two prominent leaders — China’s President Xi Jinping and Russia’s President Vladimir Putin — features a dense and strategic agenda. The summit aims to address a range of pressing global issues, from trade and technology to health and security.
India’s Key Focus at BRICS
For India, a strong emphasis will be placed on counter-terrorism. According to diplomatic sources, PM Modi is expected to push for a clear condemnation of terrorism, particularly in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, which claimed the lives of 26 people, most of them tourists.
India is also advocating for:
- Trade settlements in national currencies, to reduce dependence on the U.S. dollar
- A climate finance framework
- Deeper collaboration in artificial intelligence research
- A new healthcare initiative to reduce inequalities across member nations
BRICS Response to U.S. Trade Policies
The group is also likely to express collective concern over U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent tariff escalations, which many BRICS nations argue are damaging to the global trade order. A draft summit declaration, accessed by AFP, reportedly criticizes unilateral tariff actions without naming the U.S. or its president directly.
The statement notes, “We voice serious concerns about the rise of unilateral tariff and non-tariff measures which distort trade and are inconsistent with WTO rules.”
Leaders are expected to finalize and adopt this declaration during the summit’s closing session.
