In a landmark diplomatic engagement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a bilateral meeting with Ghanaian President John Mahama in Accra, marking the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Ghana in over three decades. The visit elevated the relationship between the two nations to a Comprehensive Partnership, setting the stage for expanded collaboration across key sectors.
During the talks, both leaders underlined the vast potential for joint initiatives in critical minerals, defence, maritime security, digital payments, and energy. A total of four Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) were signed, covering cultural exchange, traditional medicine, standardisation, and institutional dialogue.
“India and Ghana see great opportunities for cooperation in areas like defence, critical minerals, fintech, and healthcare,” PM Modi shared on social media.

One significant outcome of the discussions was India’s readiness to introduce its UPI digital payment system in Ghana, aiming to bolster financial inclusion and ease digital transactions. The two countries also agreed to strengthen their partnership in the defence sector, with a focus on maritime security, counter-terrorism efforts, and cybersecurity.
In the economic sphere, PM Modi highlighted India’s growing investments in Ghana, totaling nearly $2 billion across around 900 projects. Both nations set an ambitious goal to double their bilateral trade within the next five years.
The leaders additionally explored cooperation in pharmaceutical manufacturing and vaccine production, with Ghana aiming to position itself as a hub for vaccines in West Africa.
In agriculture, India pledged support to help Ghana enhance its food security initiatives and develop itself as a key food producer for the region.
Both sides also addressed global and regional security challenges, reaffirming their shared commitment to promoting peace through dialogue and diplomacy.
This visit marks a crucial step in India’s strategic outreach to Africa and reinforces its role as a valued partner in the Global South.
